Opinion Please

I've just cut out the quilt top for my first non-quilting kit quilt.  The only part I haven't done is cut out the rectangles for the border.  The directions need 40 3 1/4 by 5 1/2 squares.  I just don't know what material to use.  I have a yellow, but I don't know if it should be all yellow?  I still have enough of the other fabrics left to cut out some with those.  What do you think?

  1. Those colours look great together! I would wait to cut the borders until you've got the quilt top sewn together. Then you'll have more of an idea of what you need to balance it out. Otherwise you might cut the border and then not like it once the quilt is done. I never cut the border until I can "audition" it with the full top.

  2. Well here is another idea...You could put a border between your row of squares and that way when you come to finishing the edge border it ties into the quilt better. Look at the hockey quilt I made Elijah to understand a little better. Also you could lay the strips you wish to use for the edge border next to the quilt squares and see which order and combination you like the best. Also you can vary the width of the border that is making them 1" or 1 1/2" or 2" or 3"'s wide...but first you will have to calculate the amount of fabric you have left over to be sure you have enough to do all four sides. Hope this helps...love Mum
